Ask yourself: Does this support the life I’m trying to create?
Are your actions bringing you closer to, or further away from, the person you want to be and the life that you want to build?
All day long we are engaged in different types of activities, whether it be laying in bed, eating, playing with the kiddies, watching tv, hanging out with friends, etc.
Some of the things that we do will bring us closer toward the dream life that we want , whilst other actions (consciously or unconsciously) might be actually taking us away from our ideal life experience 🙄.
When life is relatively smooth-sailing, it is clearly going to be easier for us to make choices to behave in alignment with our values and future goals.
The reality is though, life is challenging and zig-zagged all over the place, with demands which can arise at any given time.
This can make it difficult for us to continue to stay on track, behaving in the way we truly want to.
The more you practice asking yourself this question, the easier it will be to catch yourself when you get off track, and then to get back into alignment with what you really want.
This can be explored further as part of the "Choice Point 2.0 Exercise" in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. It is based on Bailey, Ciarrochi and Harris' "Choice Point" in the book "The Weight Escape", 2013.
